Question---> Hi all - I just acquired a used '72 1600 for my bus. After giving it a compression test, I decided to give it a top-end rebuild. My question is this: Are there any tests/measurements that I can perform on the engine (before or after I tear off the heads and pistons) that would give me a good indication of the condition of the bottom end? I would like to not split the case and only do the top-end (because of monetary and time restraints) but would do it if I thought it necessary. Any advice or suggestions?

Answer---> One way to check the lower end is to start the motor and run it for a short time to build up oil pressure and then turn off the ignition. Then as soon as the engine stops flip the key back on and see how long it takes for the oil warning light to come on. If it stays off for 4 to 5 seconds or more the lower end and lifter bores are OK but if the oil light comes on as soon as the motor stops running then it's time to check out the Lower End. If you check it this way the heavy duty oil relief spring's and large oil pumps wont cover up loose bearings and lifter bores. The other thing is checking the crank for end play. Grab the lower Pulley (on the Crank) and push & pull on it. You should feel little to no end play. The required end play is .004/.006" and when the oil is present it feels like none to maybe a very slight amount. If it moves back an forth .010 or more then the main bearing is moving in the case and it's time for a line bore. You can do a fast check on blow-by by pulling the dip stick out and revving up the motor, if oil comes up out of the dip stick tube, then the rings are shot. Be sure the stock oil breather vent is working. ( Large hi revving engines will require extra crankcase venting.) Vic
