Question: .... > I'm doing some front end work on my 67 bug. The passenger wheel leans out more at the top then the drivers side. The lower ball joints were bad so I replaced them (what a job!)  The upper ones looked OK so I tried adjusted the eccentric bushing on the upper ball joint, My Haynes manual says the mark should be straight ahead but this makes it worse. I put the car up on jack stands and checked the toe in. It was about a 1/2" closer in the front. That seems like a lot of toe in to me. What do you think? I need new tires, but I don't want to  put them on until I get the front end right. I am afraid they will wear out real quick like the last set.

Answer: .... > The toe in should be checked with the weight of the car on the ground. Put a mark on the center of the tire (same height as the spindle nut) measure across the front and then role the car until the same mark is at the rear. You should have about 1/8" toe in at the front. If a wheel leans in or out when looking at it from the front ( camber) and it can not be set correctly with the eccentric then it is most likely one of the arms is bent slightly and might need replacing. Most shops that replace Ball Joints have a jig to check the arms before installing the new ball joints. I agree with you that it is not the easiest job to do and a greasy mess but we have added some information on removing the old ball joints that might be helpful if there is a next time.*ck  Vic.
