vw@vwhelp.comE-Mail Questions with Answersthe rotor pointed towards #3 cylinder rather than the right rear tire as explained in your web pages. Incidentally, while doing this I also took the valve covers off to make sure the intake valve for #1 closed just prior to the timing mark appearing at 12 o'clock at TDC. And then when trying to time the engine with a static light (aka John Muir book,) the light would come on at various positions when I rotated the distributor, so I have no idea which is the correct position where to set the timing. Is it normal that the static timing light come on at numerous positions when rotating the shaft of the distributor? thanks Answer:->...No Problem John, the static light just tell you when the points close (make contact). The type 3 distributors are set up as you described or 180 degrees from the type 1. The type 1 Bug is set up with # 1 plug wire as shown because physically it must be in this position to clear the vacuum pot. If some one dropped the distributor drive in 90 degrees off or even one tooth out of the stock location your bug will be pointing in a different location. The 009 with out the vacuum pot can set in any way you like. Some builders set the drive in 90' out so when they use the Porsche style 90' cap the plug wires will be pointing towards the fan shroud. The main thing is that the #1 plug wire be in the hole above the rotor when it points to the mark on the top of the distributor body (4 in photo) The next thing is to time your motor with a timing light not statically. What you are concerned with is when the plug fires when the mechanical advance is all in. (full advanced above 3000 rpm) This will be some place between 27' and 31' before top dead center. Run with as much initial advance as possible without any pinging. If it pings on a hard pull at low to medium rpm then retard the timing slightly. Any thing not clear just e-mail me. Have a nice day.
