Question:.... > I just have to ask this question. I bought a rebuilt crank exchange and guy miked the journals and then taped it with a very small hammer.  He then stated it was fine for a core and got my new crank. Why did he hit my old crank with the little hammer, was he mad at it or was there some other reason.  Sorry if this is a dumb question.   Paul

Good question Paul. The reason he hit your old crank was he was doing a "Poor mans magna-flux"  He tap's it with a metal object while supporting it in the air on with one finger (or hangs it from a piece of wire) It must be a bare crank, no gears or anything attached. Most VW cranks crack because they have been reground by someone not familiar with the VW.  The VW crank must be ground with a larger outside radius then most other cranks and the crank grinder will not redress his grinding wheel for one or two cranks. You can't blame him when the wheel might cost $700 to $800 bucks. That's why we recommend getting your crank from someone who specializes in VW's
