Most air filters are made to fit
the stock 2 1/16" dia. VW Solex carbs or the old 2
5/8" Holley Bug spray & Zenith 32NDIX. Special filter
bases are required for the Progressive 2-barrel carbs and the
Weber & Dellorto carbs.
If you spend most of you time in off-road dusty or wet conditions,
then the #1 type air filter works best. What makes this type of
filter really work is the air, with the dirt & water is made
to turn sharply. The dirt & water being heavier then the air,
has a tendency to keep going straight so when the air turns a
large percentage of the dirt & water keeps going straight and
never gets to the filter element.
If you only occasionally go play off-road you can make one of the
street type filters work the same way. We purchased a small cake
and with three drops of silicon seal, fastened the container over
the street filter. This filter will now last 4 or 5 times as long
as one without the cover.
Filter Wraps can be a big help if you understand them.
First let us state they all filters & wraps restrict the air
flow to some degree. Holding them up to your mouth and blowing
through them is no test. Foam filter raps are run dry, as they are
intended to stop some of the dirt, sand and mud and gradually let
it work it's way to the bottom and fall off. Never grease the
bottom of the filter wrap and be sure it hangs over the lower
outside edge of the filter housing. Don't think a nylon stocking
works the same as the wrap made to keep sand out. After installing
any filter wrap it is best to recheck carb jetting for best
performance.
All K&N felt type filters and foam filters must be oiled
before using. You can make an excellent filter oil by
mixing 20% STP with 80% light weight motor oil. The STP keeps the
oil from wicking out on a hot day and also seems to help keep out
the water.
It only takes a hole the size of a toothpick to make
your air filter useless. We always grease the top and bottom of
the filter to help get a good air tight seal. Some filters have
small slots in the base where they fit to the carb throat. The
slots let the hose clamp tighten the filter base to the carb. The
only problem is if the slot lines up with a slot in the hose
clamp, you can end up with a hole directly above the top of the
carb. If this happens your filter is useless.
